What is the British Monarchs Coin Collection?
The British Monarchs Collection is a revolutionary new coin series from The Royal Mint.
Using historical coin designs, it will feature a range of coinage portraits for iconic monarchs from British history.
Each coin bears an original coinage portrait of a monarch as it appeared during their reign, transposed from genuine historical samples using state-of-the-art technology and faithfully recreated for contemporary coinage.

The first Tudor King, Henry VII, was also the father of King Henry VIII.
A shrewd king, he gathered huge wealth for the Crown. He is also credited with successfully ending the War of the Roses between the houses of Lancaster and York

The introduction of the ‘shilling’ and perhaps most notably the introduction in 1489 of the first ‘Gold Sovereign’ tariffed at 20/- or one Pound.

In 1489, Henry VII issued a new gold coin, the ‘sovereign’. Its name reflects the splendor of a great gold coin worth 20 shillings, weighing 240 grains.
