The Royal Mint has released an Innovation in Science series of coins to honor some of the most brilliant minds of our time. The first coin in the series is dedicated to the life and work of Stephen Hawking, one of the world’s most renowned physicists. Born in 1942 in Oxford, Stephen Hawking was known for his incredible intelligence from a young age. Despite being diagnosed with a rare form of Motor Neurone Disease at the age of 20, Stephen was able to continue his work and present groundbreaking theories that have helped us understand the history of the universe.
Another coin in the series is dedicated to the legacy of Rosalind Franklin, a brilliant scientist who made key contributions to the discovery of the structure of DNA. Although her work was not properly recognized during her lifetime, this coin is a fitting tribute to her legacy and her role in one of the greatest discoveries of the 20th century.
The series also includes coins honoring John Logie Baird, a Scottish inventor who played a pivotal role in the development of television and Charles Babbage, a scientist and inventor who was ahead of his time and whose work laid the foundation for modern computers.
The series also features a coin commemorating the discovery of insulin, a medical breakthrough that has saved the lives of millions of people with diabetes. This coin is a tribute to the work of John Macleod, Sir Frederick Banting, Charles Best and James Collip, who made this life-saving discovery possible.
Each coin in the series is a fitting tribute to the lives and legacies of these brilliant minds and their contributions to science and technology. Each coin is available in limited edition and makes a perfect addition to any coin collection or as a way of owning a piece of history.
