On the 10th of October 2022, the Royal Mint released a series of coins to celebrate 100 years of the British Broadcasting Company, more commonly known as the BBC.
Highly regarded for its award-winning creative output, impartial news service, and innovative use of technology, the BBC continues to build upon its reputation as the world’s leading public broadcaster.
This world-leading public service broadcaster turns 100 in 2022 and the mint is celebrating the anniversary with a special coin featuring a thoughtfully crafted reverse design by the artist Henry Gray. They are accompanied by detailed packaging that conveys the Corporation’s continued reach, influence, and popularity.
The coins are produced in collaboration with the BBC. The packaging for the BBC 100th anniversary coin had been printed prior to the sad passing of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In the interest of sustainability, the Royal Mint said they chose not to re-print the enclosed booklet to minimise any potential environmental impact.

With thousands of people in the queue at the Royal Mint website, the limited edition coins sold out quickly on the morning of release. The BUNC coin is still available.
The BBC 50p will not be entering general coin circulation.

A Limited Edition of 100 sets and struck a century apart, the coins in this set pay tribute to the 100th anniversary of the BBC.
It includes a gold, 2022-dated UK 50p coin dedicated to the BBC.
The 1922 Sovereign features George V on the obverse. The BBC broadcast the first Christmas address by a British monarch – delivered by George V – in 1932.

In support of His Majesty the King’s ambition for a sustainable transition, the Royal Mint will continue to offer 2022 coins struck with Her Late Majesty’s effigy.
The 100 years of the BBC is the first to be released by The Royal Mint since the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth and will continue to bear her effigy on the obverse (heads) side of the coin.
This ensures minimal environmental impact as the designs, tools, and packaging for these products have already been produced.
