Alfred The Great new £5 coins were released on 22nd April 2021 to pay tribute to the visionary monarch Alfred the Great, whose legacy paved the way for the United Kingdom we know today.
The coin design is inspired by a priceless Anglo-Saxon artifact, the Alfred Jewel. The reverse design for the coin features special ‘punch’ style lettering – a technique that was used on coins during Alfred the Great’s reign.
