What new coins are coming out in 2022?

New coin releases from The Royal Mint in 2022

On the 10th of June 2022, The Royal Mint published a series of Proclamations of coins intended for release sometime in 2022.

The Royal Proclamation is the first official confirmation that Her Majesty The Queen has approved the new coins and their design but it only provides limited information on the designs and no actual images.

2022 Snowman 50p

Since the first Snowman 50p coins in 2018, The Royal Mint has released a snowman fifty pence every year around Christmas time for UK coin collectors.

This year will be no exception as we return to the work of Raymond Briggs characters and this next coin will feature the snowman and the snow dog.

The Royal Proclamation describes the coins as:

The design of the said fifty pence gold, silver and cupro-nickel coins shall be as follows:

‘For the obverse impression Our effigy with the inscription “· ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 50 PENCE ·” and the date of the year, and for the reverse a depiction of the Snowman and the Snowdog. The coins shall have a plain edge.’

City Views of Rome Coins

City Views is a new coin series celebrating the great cities of the world and the landmarks that define them. The coin series will run over a number of years, with the designs featuring cities from around the world.

Another Royal Proclamation confirms the second coin in the series following the City Views of London release will feature the city of Rome in Italy.

The Royal Proclamation describes the coins as:

‘For the obverse impression Our effigy with the inscription “· ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 2 POUNDS ·” and the date of the year, and for the reverse a depiction of a historic view of Rome with the inscription “ROME”. The coin shall have a grained edge.’

It’s quite unusual as UK coins usually have only British themes.

New £2 coins

A proclamation determining the specifications and designs for a new series of two pound coins in gold, standard silver, silver piedfort, platinum and cupro-nickel, and nickel-brass.

The Royal Proclamation describes the designs of the said two pound gold, silver, silver piedfort, platinum, cupro-nickel and nickel-brass coins shall be:

‘For the obverse impression Our effigy with the inscription “· ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 2 POUNDS ·” and the date of the year, and for the reverse either:

Smallpox £2 Coins

an abstract depiction of a smallpox cell accompanied by a representation of the people who have benefited from vaccination with the inscription “EDWARD JENNER A VACCINE TO END SMALLPOX”.

The coin shall have a grained edge and in incuse letters the inscription “· INNOVATION IN SCIENCE · JENNER” save for the gold and platinum coins where the incuse letters shall be accompanied by a plain edge;

JRR Tolkien £2 Coins

a depiction of Tolkien’s monogram with the inscription “1892 JRR TOLKIEN 1973 WRITER · POET · SCHOLAR”.

The coin shall have a grained edge and in incuse letters the inscription “· NOT ALL THOSE WHO WANDER ARE LOST” save for the gold and platinum coins where the incuse letters shall be accompanied by a plain edge

Flying Scotsman £2 Coins

a depiction of the Flying Scotsman with the inscriptions “FLYING SCOTSMAN LNER 4472” and “· 1923 – 2023 ·”.

The coin shall have a grained edge and in incuse letters the inscription “· LIVE FOR THE JOURNEY” save for the gold and platinum coins where the incuse letters shall be accompanied by a plain edge.’

The Royal Mint has upcoming coin releases for commemorative fifty pence, two pound and five pound coins in 2022. Here is what we know so far.

BBC 50p

The foundation of British Television and Radio, The British Broadcasting Company is highly regarded for its award-winning creative output, trusted and impartial news services, and innovative use of technology.

The BBC has established itself as a distinguished broadcaster in the United Kingdom and across the world since its inception in 1922.

The BBC is Celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2022 and The Royal Mint will be releasing a special fifty pence coin to mark this milestone anniversary.

To be released this year is a fifty pence coin to celebrate 100 years of the BBC which will feature the image of a globe with transmission waves on it and the inscription 1922-2022

The BBC 50p coins were released on the 10th of October 2022.

2022 Winnie the Pooh and Friends Coin Collection

Following the initial releases of three Winnie the Pooh and friends coins each year in 2020 and 2021, the final three 50p coins in the Winnie the Pooh and Friends Collection with the released in 2022 to complete the 9-coin set.

Joining the adventure in 2022 are Eeyore, Kanga, and Roo, and a coin featuring Winnie the Pooh and some of his closest friends gathered in the Hundred Acre Wood.

In 2022 His Royal Highness Prince William will celebrate his 40th birthday. To mark the occasion The Royal Mint is set to issue a brand new £5 coin.

The Royal Mint reveals new commemorative coins for 2022

The Royal Mint has revealed five new coin designs for 2022, including a 50p, £5 crown and special celebration platinum set to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

A fitting celebration of a momentous 70 years on the throne between 1952 and 2022 at the age of 95 years old.

What new Royal Mint coins have been released in 2022?

• 2022 Annual Coin Sets available in a range of base and precious metals from 4 January
  • The Royal Mint’s Annual Sets celebrate key events and anniversaries throughout the
    year, bringing milestones to life on a £5, £2 or 50 pence.
  • Each of the coins features a new and unique design by a commissioned artist and the
    the obverse portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, designed by Jody Clark.
  • The coins will be available to purchase individually throughout 2022, starting with the commemorative
    • Platinum Jubilee 50p
    • Platinum Jubilee £5
    • Both coins are available with a special commemorative obverse of The Queen on horseback from
      Thursday 6 January.

About the 2022 designs

The Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen 50p

Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will be celebrated with a UK 50p coin – which is the first UK 50p to mark a royal event.

Designed by Osborne Ross, the coin features a clean reverse design that comprises the number 70, The Queen’s cipher, and the years that span her reign thus far.

The Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen £5

Her Majesty the Queen’s remarkable 70-year reign will be commemorated on a £5 crown, designed by John Bergdahl.

The coin features a fittingly regal design centralised by the quartered shield of the Royal Arms.

The precious metals versions also include the edge inscription ‘SERVE YOU ALL THE DAYS OF MY LIFE’ in reference to Her Majesty’s unparalleled longevity as monarch.

Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Dame Vera Lynn

Dame Vera Lynn’s iconic renditions of classic songs such as ‘We’ll Meet Again’ earned her eternal residency within the hearts of many.

The reverse design of this UK £2 coin features a beautifully detailed portrait of Dame Vera as she appeared during the height of her fame.

Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Alexander Graham Bell

Alexander Graham Bell revolutionised the world of communication through the development of his magnum opus, the telephone.

This UK £2 coin celebrates this brilliant inventor in the centenary year of his passing.

Featuring a design by Henry Gray, the reverse of the coin shows the dial of a push-button phone, along with the words ‘PIONEER OF THE TELEPHONE’ cleverly inscribed on the buttons.

2022 Commonwealth Games

The summer of 2022 sees the Commonwealth Games return to the UK, promising a spectacular occasion for British sport.

The reverse of this UK 50p features a design by The Royal Mint’s own Natasha Preece, who has captured the essence of Birmingham 2022 through a striking geometric design.

The 2022 commemorative sets will be available in a range of precious metal and base proof finishes, from 4 January at The Royal Mint website, with prices starting from £30.

Each of the coins will be available individually in 2022, starting with the Platinum Jubilee coins which will launch on 6 January featuring a special commemorative obverse design to celebrate the momentous royal occasion.
