How many of these £2 coins are in circulation?
These coins are issued as collectible coins only and have not entered the UK circulating coins.
Who was Dame Vera Lynn?
Famously called ‘The Forces’ Sweetheart’, Dame Vera Lynn was beyond doubt the voice of her generation. Her uplifting soundtracks kept the spirits of the British and their Allies high during the turbulent times of the Second World War.
She featured on several variety shows, including the Royal Variety Performance on four occasions between 1960 and 1990.
She gained the adoration of the UK nation throughout the 1940s and in 1952, Dame Vera Lynn became the first British artist to achieve a number-one single in the United States with ‘Auf Wiederseh’n Sweetheart’.
When did she die?
BBC News announced with sadness her passing in June 2020 at the age of 103 but her voice lives on to this day through the timeless songs from Britain’s darkest hour.
After becoming a national icon during the Second World War, Dame Vera also found fame in the United States. In 1952, she became the first Brit to have a number one hit on the US music charts.
Remaining important through decades of musical change and continuing to record and perform into her eighties and nineties, winning new generations of fans along the way, Dame Vera’s extraordinary life has been commemorated on a 2022 UK £2 coin.
How many children did Vera Lynn have?
In 1941, Vera married Harry Lewis, a clarinetist, saxophonist, and fellow member of Ambrose’s orchestra whom she had met two years earlier.
The couple had one child in March 1946, Virginia Penelope Anne Lewis (now Ginny Lewis-Jones).
Harry became Vera’s manager prior to 1950, after leaving his own career behind.
After the Second World War, Lynn and Lewis moved to Finchley, north London.
Harry Lewis died in 1998.
Ginny’s thoughts on the coin;
The coin has been developed the coin with the input and approval of Dame Vera Lynn’s daughter Ginny, who was kind enough to share her thoughts on what the design means to her.
It’s fantastic to see my mother celebrated in this way; we’re just so excited and pleased – even more so knowing that Royal Mint coins require the approval of Her Majesty The Queen! What an honour! It’s a wonderful way to encapsulate Dame Vera’s career and ensure her legacy lives on.
I’m especially pleased that this coin is available to international collectors. Over the years, I’ve always been touched by the sacks of letters we receive from people all over the world who have been moved in some way by my mother’s music, charity work, or morale-boosting performances during the war. I even once received a letter from a museum in Uzbekistan commending her ‘wonderful doings’ and inviting me to drop by for a cup of tea if I was ever in the vicinity. Sadly, I haven’t been able to take up the offer … yet! But, it’s lovely to think that wherever you are, you can own this coin and remember Dame Vera.
My mother was a very modest and down-to-earth person. She might not have understood all of the fuss around this coin launch but I’m sure she would have found it wonderful to be remembered and celebrated in this way.
The new coin of cupro-nickel and nickel-brass of the denomination of two pounds made with a standard weight of 12 grammes, a standard diameter of 28.4 millimetres, being circular in shape and having joined concentric inner and outer sections, with a standard composition as to the inner section of seventy-five per centum copper and twenty-five per centum nickel, and as to the outer section of seventy-six per centum copper, four per centum nickel and twenty per centum zinc.
For the obverse impression Our effigy with the inscription “· ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 2 POUNDS ·” and the date of the year
For the reverse a portrait of Dame Vera Lynn with the inscription “DAME VERA LYNN 1917 – 2020”. The coin shall have a grained edge and in incuse letters, the inscription “WE’LL MEET AGAIN”
The said cupro-nickel and nickel-brass coin shall be current and shall be legal tender for payment of any amount in any part of Our United Kingdom.
By Royal Proclamation shall come into force on the thirtieth day of September Two thousand and twenty-one. Given at Our Court at Balmoral, this twenty-ninth day of September in the year of Our Lord Two thousand and twenty-one and in the seventieth year of Our Reign.
