The Royal Mint’s annual coin set for 2023 is sure to be a must-have for UK Coin collectors with five new commemorative coins.

2023 Annual Coin Sets List

The Silver coins are showing already sold out at 9.20 AM, just 20 minutes after release.

 

One of the standout features of the 2023 set is the effigy of all coins feature King Charles. This is the first time, the coins of the Annual Sets feature the official coinage portrait of His Majesty The King designed by Martin Jennings.

Unusually, these coin sets do not include the definitive coins (non-commemorative coins) as has been the case in prior years. The Royal Mint will release these later in the year.

With a variety of interesting and significant designs, this set is sure to be a valuable addition to any collection.

The coins will all bear the effigy of King Charles III

According to the Royal Mint, the unveiling of the new collection signifies one of the most significant changes to UK coins since decimalisation.

Collectors will see UK coins make their transition from portraits of Britain’s longest reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, to the effigy of the King.

All new Royal Mint coins struck from January 1 2023 will bear the King’s portrait.

Rebecca Morgan, divisional director of the collector services at the Royal Mint, said:

Each year the Royal Mint reveals a collection of coins, known as the annual set, which feature a range of designs that appear on £5, £2 and 50p coins marking some of the year’s most significant moments and anniversaries.

Coins in the commemorative collection will mark milestone anniversaries and moments in history, including the King’s 75th birthday.

The 2023 annual set will include:

• £5 coin marking the 75th birthday of the King
• £2 coin celebrating the life and work of JRR Tolkien
• £2 coin celebrating the centenary of the Flying Scotsman
• 50p coin celebrating 75 years of the NHS
• 50p coin celebrating the Windrush generation

Each of the coins will also be available individually in 2023 according to The Royal Mint.

The Windrush Generations 50p Coin

Marks the 75th anniversary of historic voyage.

What is the Windrush Generation?

The Windrush Generation refers to the group of people from the Caribbean who were invited to come to the United Kingdom in the years following World War II to help rebuild the country. The name Windrush comes from the HMT Empire Windrush, the ship that brought one of the first groups of Caribbean immigrants to the UK in 1948.

The UK granted indefinite leave to remain in the country to many members of the Windrush Generation who arrived as children. However, in the years following their arrival, the UK government did not keep comprehensive records of those granted leave to remain, and as a result, many members of the Windrush Generation were unable to provide documentation to prove their right to live and work in the UK.

In 2018, it was revealed that the UK government had wrongly deported or detained a number of people from the Windrush Generation, leading to a public outcry and a formal apology from the government. In response, the government established the Windrush Scheme to help those affected by the scandal to regularize their immigration status and obtain the documentation they need to remain in the UK.

The ship has become symbolic of its passengers and their subsequent generations who have played a pivotal role. The 50p coin commemorates 75 years since the ship’s arrival and features a design by artist Valda Jackson, whose parents came to Britain from the Caribbean.

When and where can you buy the coin sets?

The 2023 commemorative sets will be available in a range of precious metal and base proof finishes, from January 3rd on the Royal Mint’s website, with prices starting from £50.

It is reported that a set of silver proof coins will be available for £311 and a gold set can be bought for £7,845 – but final prices will be confirmed on the day of release, due to fluctuations in precious metals.
