Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine Coins
The Royal Mint released in September 2023 a series of commemorative coins featuring the feared lord of darkness, Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine, two iconic villains from the Star Wars franchise. The release coincided with the 40th anniversary of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. The coins are available individually, or as part of the Star Wars coin set of 4 designs from The Royal Mint. The first coin release featured R2-D2 and C-3PO.
The coins are available in various denominations and precious metals, including:
- 50p Brilliant Uncirculated: This was the first time Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine appeared on an official UK coin. It’s part of a four-coin collection celebrating iconic duos from Star Wars.
- 1oz Silver Proof: Limited to 3,000 coins, this proof coin features a lenticular image of the Death Star and the Galactic Empire insignia.
- 1/4oz Gold Proof: Only 500 of these coins were minted, making them highly collectible. They’re struck in 24 carat gold and finished to Proof standard.
- 1oz Gold Proof: The ultimate collector’s item, with only 250 coins available. Struck in 24 carat gold and featuring a lenticular image, it’s a stunning tribute to these classic Star Wars characters
All coins were produced in collaboration with Lucasfilm and Disney.

Celebrating the Power of the Dark Side
Following the success of the first coin in The Royal Mint’s Star Wars™ – inspired Character Duos collection, a coin dedicated to the popular mechanical double act of R2-D2™ and C-3PO™, it was only fitting that the Royal Mint maintain that level of star power with an equally iconic pairing for coin two.
Their follow-up design is dedicated to the most evil twosome in the entire Star Wars galaxy – Darth Vader™ and Emperor Palpatine™.
