The Royal Mint has followed on from the success of the 2021 Britannia coin range which features the traditional Core Britannia range as well as a second design that extended the collection to include a Premium Exclusive range that celebrates diversity by featuring a woman of color. – as a woman of colour.
This is the first time that Britannia has been featured as a woman of colour on a UK coin.
Britannia 2022 – the Making of an Icon
For 2022 the “Core Range” features Britannia dressed in a robe and wearing her familiar helmet whilst holding a trident and shield with a lion symbol.
The British flag, sun rays, and ocean waves behind. This is a beautiful design! Designed by Dan Thorne
A Celebration of Womanhood
The “Exclusive Edition” is by coin designer Sandra Deiana and personifies Britannia at three stages in her life.
It depicts Britannia as a little girl, then the traditional helm followed by her in her senior years.
The Exclusive Edition design is aimed at celebrating International Women’s Day which is the day of the coin release on 8th March 2022.
Claire Maclennan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal said:
Britannia has graced Britain’s coins since Roman times and is one of the most enduring female icons of our nation.
On International Women’s Day, we are delighted to unveil an original new design that champions women of all ages as equal.
This beautiful new design reflects The Royal Mint’s own commitment to diversity and equality, ensuring women can prosper in all areas of our business and see themselves on the nation’s coins.
Who is Britannia?
Britannia is a female warrior who symbolises Britain.
Britannia first appeared on UK coins around 2,000 years ago under the rule of Emperor Hadrian.
The Romans depicted Britannia as a strong female – a symbol that has endured and continues to grace the nation’s coins today on the circulating £2 and commemorative designs.
