New £2 Coin Release from The Royal Mint
The Alexander Graham Bell coin celebrates the centenary year of his death with a commemorative £2 coin.
One of the five coins included in the 2022 Annual Sets, this coin is now available to own as a standalone release, complete with bespoke packaging.
£2 Coin Design
The £2 coin design features a push-button telephone pad with the years of his birth (1847) and death (1922) and his name around.
Some coin collectors have commented that they would have preferred the depiction of a rotary-dial telephone on the coin design as it better suits the round coin and was available earlier in the history of the telephone.

Who is he?
On the 10th March 1876, Alexander Graham Bell completely revolutionised the world of communication when he achieved the first successful telephone transmission in history.
There are few inventions to have had such a global impact on the world as the telephone.
First patented in 1876, this revolutionary device has gone on to become a must-have piece of technology, with an estimated 82.9% of the United Kingdom’s population owning a smartphone.
Bell was a Scottish inventor with a strong communication background because both his mother and his wife were deaf, whilst his father was a teacher of elocution.
2022 marks 100 years since his death in 1922 at the age of 75 years old.
Who is credited with inventing the telephone?
Alexander Graham Bell is credited with being the inventor of the telephone since his patent and demonstrations for an apparatus designed for “transmitting vocal or other sounds telegraphically…causing electrical undulations” were successful.
Antonio Meucci, an Italian immigrant, began developing the design of a talking telegraph (telephone) in 1849. In 1871, he filed an announcement of an invention for his design. Due to financial hardships, Meucci could not renew his caveat.
