The Story of Dippy, The Diplodocus Dinosaur
Dippy, the Natural History Museum’s beloved Diplodocus cast, has captivated visitors since its London debut in 1905. This plaster-of-Paris replica of Diplodocus carnegii was a gift from industrialist Andrew Carnegie to King Edward VII. The original fossil, discovered in Wyoming in 1899, resides at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh. Dippy’s name derives from the Greek “diplos,” meaning “double,” and “dokos,” meaning “beam,” referencing the double-beamed chevron bones on the underside of its tail. Natural History Museum
Measuring approximately 24 meters in length, Dippy became an iconic centerpiece in the Museum’s Hintze Hall from 1979 until 2017. In 2018, Dippy embarked on a nationwide tour across the UK, inspiring millions to explore natural history. The tour concluded in 2020, and Dippy returned to the Museum for a special exhibition, “Dippy Returns: The Nation’s Favourite Dinosaur,” which ran from May 2022 to January 2023. Dippy’s enduring appeal continues to inspire curiosity and wonder about the prehistoric world!
