About This Coin

X-wing Starfighter – Star Wars Universe

In the Star Wars universe, the X-wing starfighter is an iconic space superiority vessel primarily used by the Rebel Alliance and its successors. It is named for the distinctive "X" shape formed when its four "S-foil" wings are locked in attack position.

Key Characteristics

Design & Origin

Originally designed by Incom Corporation for the Galactic Empire, the design team defected to the Rebel Alliance, bringing the prototypes and plans with them. It is a versatile "all-rounder" known for balancing speed, maneuverability, and durability.

Armament

Standard models are equipped with four laser cannons (one on the tip of each wing) and two proton torpedo launchers.

Technical Features

  • Hyperdrive: Unlike the Empire's TIE fighters, X-wings have their own hyperdrive, allowing them to operate independently from large carrier ships.
  • Astromech Droid: A socket behind the cockpit houses an astromech droid (like R2-D2) that assists with navigation, hyperspace calculations, and in-flight repairs.
  • Deflector Shields: Equipped with protective shielding and titanium alloy armor to increase pilot survivability.

Major Models

  • T-65B: The classic model used by Luke Skywalker to destroy the first Death Star during the Battle of Yavin.
  • T-70: An upgraded version used by the Resistance (flown by pilots like Poe Dameron) roughly 30 years after the original trilogy.
  • T-85: A more advanced, next-generation model utilized by the New Republic Defense Fleet before its destruction by the First Order.

Famous Pilots & Squadrons

  • Luke Skywalker: The most famous X-wing pilot, using the callsign Red Five.
  • Wedge Antilles: A veteran pilot who survived both Death Star battles and led the elite Rogue Squadron.
  • Poe Dameron: A leading commander for the Resistance, often flying a customized black-and-orange T-70 known as "Black One".
