Coin Description

Coin Information: 2024 Death Star II 50p

The grand finale of the "Iconic Vehicles" collection features the ultimate power in the universe—the Death Star II. This 2024-dated coin completes the four-coin set, showcasing the Galactic Empire's moon-sized battle station as it appeared under construction in Return of the Jedi.

The Design

The reverse, created in collaboration with Lucasfilm, features a film-accurate depiction of the partially completed Death Star II alongside the official "Star Wars" logo. This release includes the signature lenticular security feature which, when tilted, transitions between:

  • The Galactic Empire insignia.
  • A silhouette of the Death Star II battle station.

The obverse displays the definitive coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III by Martin Jennings, completing the transition of the Star Wars collection into the new Carolean era.

About This Coin

Death Star – Star Wars Universe

The Death Star is one of the most infamous superweapons in the galaxy. Designed by the Galactic Empire, it is a massive space station with the capability to destroy entire planets with its primary weapon. Its sheer scale and destructive power made it a symbol of fear and control throughout the galaxy.

“That’s no moon. It’s a space station.” – Obi-Wan Kenobi

Design & Construction

  • Designed by: Imperial Department of Military Research and overseen by Grand Moff Tarkin.
  • Core Concept: Based on plans taken from the Geonosians during the Clone Wars.
  • Size: Over 160 km in diameter (Death Star I).
  • Population: Manned by over 1 million personnel, including stormtroopers, officers, technicians, and droids.

Primary Weapon

The Death Star’s main feature is its superlaser — a planet-destroying beam powered by kyber crystals. When fired, multiple tributary lasers converge into a single beam, capable of obliterating entire planets in seconds.

Major Appearances

  • Death Star I: Used to destroy Alderaan; later destroyed by Luke Skywalker during the Battle of Yavin.
  • Death Star II: Larger and more powerful, constructed in secrecy; destroyed during the Battle of Endor by the Rebel Alliance.
  • Rogue One: Explores the origin of the Death Star plans and the Rebel mission to steal them.

Key Figures Involved

  • Grand Moff Tarkin: Commander of Death Star I and primary enforcer of its terror.
  • Darth Vader: Oversaw operations and security during both Death Star deployments.
  • Galen Erso: Secretly sabotaged the Death Star by designing a critical flaw in its reactor system.
  • Leia Organa: Captured and forced to witness the destruction of her homeworld, Alderaan.

Legacy

  • The Death Star became the ultimate symbol of Imperial oppression and was a catalyst for widespread rebellion.
  • Its destruction marked turning points in the Galactic Civil War.
  • Its core design influenced later superweapons, including Starkiller Base.
